The summer holidays are in full swing but don’t be fooled into thinking your child is loving time away from the classroom. Our survey for Nick Jr has found that it’ll be a mere 10 days before they’ll be telling you that they’re bored.
And that’s not all! Once the boredom hits, the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ will be heard up to four times a day.
The survey of 2,000 parents of children in year 1 or above found that 1 in 7 will find it hard to keep their child entertained throughout the summer break. In fact, more than half reckon their child will start to look forward to going back to school around half way through the six-week break.
When it comes to dealing with the outpouring of boredom, the most common reply from mums and dads was ‘But you’ve got loads of toys’. “If you’re so bored you can always help with the chores”, “Go and amuse yourself”, and “When I was your age I had a lot less, and I managed”, were also revealed as popular comebacks.
The survey was part of a campaign with our partners, 72Point, commissioned by Nick Jr as part of the channel’s ‘Make It and Bake It’ campaign, which encourages kids to bake cakes and treats, the best of which will be shown on the channel’s most popular shows. The story achieved widespread digital media coverage including in The Sun, The Scottish Sun, The Mirror and Hello Magazine as well as on over 60 regional news sites. The story was also featured in print versions of The Sun and Irish Sun.
