The verdict is in! Roy Hodgson was to blame for England’s sorry performance in France.
Following England’s surprising, yet slightly predictable defeat to Iceland in Euro 2016, The Sun commissioned an exclusive survey via OnePoll to find out what people really thought about the team’s less than perfect performance.
Although Roy Hodgson took the brunt of the blame, with 52% claiming it was his fault, Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart were not left unscathed. While 27% said that the blame lies solely at the goalkeeper’s door, 18% believe that Wayne was the cause, with 60% saying he should be stripped of his captaincy.
But not everyone felt that the blame was down to one single person. A staggering 70% feel that the English players as a whole are too arrogant when playing smaller nations and 62% feel they don’t take enough pride in playing for their country. Nearly half stated that the lack of pride in wearing the England shirt directly cost them the tournament. 48% believe that the sheer amount of money the players are ‘overpaid’ was the key factor behind their woeful display.
The survey also highlighted doubts about the FA itself. 28% believe that they were responsible for the loss against Iceland with nearly three-quarters of people claiming that the FA needs new leadership and direction. But with Roy Hodgson being the latest victim of the England job, the question of leadership of the team itself is also up for grabs. Whilst 44% believe Roy’s replacement should be English, 38% claim it doesn’t matter. Maybe it’s all pointless, however, as 17% of people have resigned themselves to the belief that England will never win a major tournament.
