An unconscious child is the most frightening scenario for 74% of parents according to our recent survey for St John Ambulance. The survey runs in conjunction with a recent video by the charity urging parents to learn CPR and first aid in case of emergency situations.
Our survey of 2,000 parents found that only 1 in 4 would know what to do if they were faced with a child that wasn’t breathing. Of those parents that did know first aid, 62% said they learnt it through work and the course was based around adults. Only 26% of parents had learnt first aid specifically for babies.
The video released by St John Ambulance features nursery rhyme characters who are faced with a child based first aid emergency. The characters, voiced by a host of celebrity, then sing a song teaching parents what to do. A spokeswoman for the charity stated that they hope the song will ‘stick in everyone’s heads’. The video is part of the charity’s Nursery Rhyme Inc campaign and has been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.
The survey data was featured on the Huffington Post, the MailOnline, ITV.com among others, and shared extensively across social media platforms.
In October 2016, St John Ambulance partnered with Tesco to launch the CPR babygrow as a follow up to the Nursery Rhyme Inc campaign. The babygrow teaches parents how to perform CPR on their baby in an emergency. Third-sector covered the launch of the babygrow, commenting on the success of both the Chokeables and the Nursery Rhyme Inc. campaigns.
